How to create melodic and exciting guitar solos
A step-by-step interactive approach: the ‘Jam Along With Tom’ course!
This easy short course features 8 key methods that explore how to create great guitar solos. You can download a sample and/or buy a copy here: https://tinyurl.com/zfrzwjx5
Course Structure:
The first few steps keep things simple to ease beginners into improvising. For example, the course looks at how to vary rhythm (including the importance of space), create new patterns from scales and add in techniques effectively.
This is followed by some really useful methods for developing melodic phrasing and structuring solos effectively. These approaches include ‘Question and Answer phrasing’, ‘The Watchtower Approach’ and ‘Sequencing’. They should all be very helpful for more experienced musicians too as they provide a framework that can be refined for years to come.
Interactive Approach
‘Bouncing ideas’ off of other musicians is an especially effective way to learn to improvise and so each of the 8 approaches come with a ‘virtual jam’ with me! These 8 videos have a format of taking turns with licks – I’ll improvise a line using the relevant method and then I’ll leave a space for you to do the same. You can play something similar to my lick or try something different. If you prefer to improvise guitar on your own then you can just use the backing track Mp3 provided instead.
Why Improvise?
Improvising guitar solos has been one of my favourite parts of learning music since I first picked up a guitar. As well as being a useful skill for song-writing and performing live, it is a fantastic way to practice a variety of techniques. Guitar improvisation also has a powerful and varied effect on the brain, including increasing creativity and silencing your ‘inner critic’ (see this link for more info on this: How Improvisation Changes the Brain | Psychology Today)
Included In The Course:
– 16 page PDF E-Book containing all of the 8 methods and a scales sheet. Each guitar lick example comes with TABs and notation.
– 9 videos (8 ‘jam along’ videos based on each methods and an intro video). Each one suitable as a music video for class or for personal use.
– 8 audio files including all method examples and the backing track
I hope this course enriches your enjoyment of music, helps you develop your creativity and most importantly builds your confidence that you can create a great guitar solo.
